Congestion Causing Delays for Cargo around Port of Montreal

Currently, congestion is causing delays for cargo in and around the Port of Montreal. Several factors are contributing to the delays, including weather conditions, on-dock dwell times, and driver shortages. As a result, some ocean carriers are implementing a congestion fee.

• Some dray carriers are no longer serving the Port of Montreal. Carriers are pulling drivers because on-dock dwell times have cut into the number of turns they can make daily.
• CN Rail has limited empty inbound cars.
• Weather related challenges have slowed loads between the Greater Toronto Area and the Port of Montreal.

Effective February 8th, Maersk introduced a congestion fee destination (CFD) for all cargo discharging at Montreal for “non-regulated countries” and March 6th for regulated countries.
